The Fast & Furious Connection
We don’t lead with this in conversation, but it answers a question every new client asks eventually. Yes, that Fast & Furious franchise. Modern Image worked on production cars across the franchise, and the work is what built our reputation as the West Coast shop the rest of the industry calls when a build has to be flawless under camera lighting and hold up to days of shooting.
Cinema-grade work has a particular standard. The cars on a major film set are inspected on monitors at 8K — at that resolution, every micron of orange peel, every barely-visible film edge, every imperfect cut around a fender vent shows up. The same eye that satisfies a director satisfies a Pebble Beach concours judge, or a Ferrari Tailor Made client who wants their PTS factory color preserved exactly as delivered.
The Fast & Furious work isn’t why our exotic clients come to us. But it’s a useful shorthand for the standard we hold every install to.
The Cars We Protect
Every exotic marque ages differently and damages differently. A Ferrari Rosso Corsa fades in a way that Lamborghini Verde Mantis doesn’t. McLaren paint is famously thin and notorious for orange peel from the factory. Porsche’s PTS program produces colors that no body shop in the country can match if anything is ever damaged. The film and coating choice has to respect each marque’s specific paint chemistry, body curvature, and OEM warranty terms. We’ve spent 25 years cataloguing those differences.
Ferrari
We’ve protected hundreds of Ferraris out of Kearny Mesa across every modern model — 458, 488, F8, 296, SF90, Portofino, Roma, GTC4Lusso, 812, F12, LaFerrari, and the limited halo cars Ferrari builds for its Special Projects clients. We work with Ferrari of San Diego dealership relationships and prep new deliveries for owners directly off the truck. Rosso Corsa, Giallo Modena, Blu Tour de France, and Tailor Made colors all have specific care considerations — we’ll walk through them at consultation.
Lamborghini
Huracán, Aventador, Urus, Revuelto, and the limited-series cars (Sián, Countach LPI, SVJ Roadster) all come through our shop. Lamborghini paint thickness varies considerably across the lineup, which matters more for ceramic coating prep than most owners realize. We coordinate directly with Lamborghini Tutto Corsa clients and the broader San Diego Lamborghini Club community.
McLaren
The 720S, 765LT, GT, Artura, and the limited Senna/Speedtail/Elva builds. McLaren’s carbon-fiber tubs and lightweight body construction demand a different install approach than most shops use — heat handling matters, edge wrapping has to respect the active aero, and the factory orange peel is a known issue we’ve developed protocols for. We’re the shop that knows how to handle a 765LT’s louvered fender properly.
Porsche
The largest single segment of our exotic work, and the most loyal. 911 GT3, GT3 RS, GT2 RS, Turbo S, the 992-generation lineup, Cayman GT4, and the GT4 RS. Taycan and Cayenne too — modern Porsche owners often have multiple cars across the lineup, and we end up handling the whole garage. PTS color owners trust us specifically because PTS paint is irreplaceable if damaged.
Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin
Continental GT, Flying Spur, Bentayga, Phantom, Ghost, Cullinan, DBS, DBX, Vantage, the limited V12 Speedster. Ultra-luxury and grand tourer protection emphasizes finish preservation more than impact armor — the cars are driven differently, and the protection plan reflects that. Window tinting and ceramic-on-leather treatments are part of most builds in this category.
Hypercars and ultra-exotics
Pagani, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Ford GT, McLaren P1/Senna, Ferrari LaFerrari, the Aston Martin Valkyrie, and the unicorn cars our NDA terms prevent us from naming. When a $3M car arrives at our shop, the install is private, the schedule is locked, and the only people who touch the vehicle are vetted senior installers. There is a different process for these cars and we’ve done enough of them to be the shop most ultra-exotic owners on the West Coast call first.
What Makes Exotic-Tier Paint Protection Different
Every shop in San Diego will tell you they do exotic work. Most don’t, in the way the cars actually require. The differences come down to four things, and exotic owners learn to ask about all four before letting anyone touch their car:
Concours-level surface prep. Most shops do a wash and a clay bar before PPF install. We do a full multi-stage paint correction on every exotic, photograph defects before we touch the car, and document the corrected paint condition before any film goes down. The film magnifies whatever it covers — a swirl mark trapped under PPF for ten years is a permanent swirl mark. The prep has to be perfect.
Marque-specific installation knowledge. Ferrari fender vents, Lamborghini active aero, McLaren active dihedral doors, Porsche aero kits, Bentley wing mirror inserts, Pagani exposed-carbon body sections — each one has install considerations the typical shop doesn’t see often enough to handle properly. We’ve been doing this long enough that the learning curve is behind us.
OEM warranty preservation. A bad install on a new Ferrari can void portions of the factory paint warranty. We document our installs to OEM standards, use only Suntek, 3M, Pure PPF and STEK films that maintain manufacturer compatibility, and have working relationships with the regional dealerships that handle warranty claims. If anything ever goes wrong, the paperwork is in order.
Discretion. Most of our clients don’t want their cars photographed in our shop and posted on social media. We don’t post client cars without permission. We can arrange transport, handle by-appointment-only intake, and keep cars off the public-facing schedule. For our hypercar and celebrity-owned clients, that discretion is the entire point.
ICON Rocklear: Available Only at Modern Image in San Diego
Most paint protection conversations in this category stop at PPF and ceramic coating. We add a third option, and we’re the only studio in San Diego that can deliver it in combination with paint protection film: ICON Rocklear.
ICON Rocklear is a two-component liquid coating applied at a 10:1 mix ratio that cures into a layer roughly 35 times thicker than a high-end ceramic, with a 15-year manufacturer warranty. Layered with PPF on the high-impact zones of an exotic — bumper, hood leading edge, lower rocker areas — it produces protection that’s been tested at 75 times stronger than standard ceramic coating alone.
For exotic and hypercar owners specifically, ICON Rocklear solves a problem PPF and ceramic can’t fully address: the kinds of micro-impact damage that come from track days, mountain road driving, and the kind of real-world use the cars were engineered for. Pagani owners who actually drive their cars know exactly what we’re talking about. Most don’t.

Concours and Show Car Preparation
We prep cars for La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, Concorso Italiano in Monterey, Cars & Chronos at the Salk Institute, and private shows across Southern California. Concours-level prep is its own discipline — paint correction goes deeper, the install demands invisible edges and zero contamination, and the timeline has to land the car on the lawn looking better than it did the day it left the factory.
Show prep also includes the things judges look for that owners don’t: undercarriage detail, engine bay restoration, OEM-correct exterior trim treatment, and color-match touchwork on any imperfections that won’t be covered by film. Our show clients often work with us across an entire season — a spring concours, a summer track event, a fall private gathering — because the standards compound.

Dealership Partnerships
Our work is referred by Ferrari relationships, Porsche specialists, Land Rover, HRE Wheels, and a network of San Diego luxury and exotic dealerships that have learned over the years where to send their best clients. New deliveries arrive at our shop direct from the dealer’s transport on a regular basis — many owners never see the car at the dealership at all, because the dealer routes it to us first for protection before final handover.

Fast Lane Drive Partnership

Track Day, Motorsport, and Driving School Prep
Exotic owners who track their cars at Buttonwillow, Willow Springs, Spring Mountain, COTA, or the various private circuits in the Southwest come to us for pre-track protection. Track use puts a different kind of damage on a car — sustained heat, brake dust, tire pickup, the occasional off — and the protection plan has to account for it.
We work with several professional driving instructors and a number of pro athletes and team principals who track their personal cars. We can’t name them. We can tell you the conversation starts with how often the car will be on a circuit, what the worst-case off looks like, and whether the owner wants ICON Rocklear added to lower body areas where rock pickup is inevitable.

Every exotic intake at Modern Image runs by appointment. The process from first call to car return:
A private consultation, in person or over phone, where we walk through your car, your usage pattern, and the protection options that fit. No assembly-line quoting.
A formal proposal with itemized scope, materials, and timeline. We don’t move forward until you’ve reviewed it.
Intake at our Kearny Mesa studio at 8656 Production Ave, or transport coordination for clients in La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Coronado, Del Mar, or anywhere else in Southern California you’d prefer the car not be driven to us. We’ve handled cross-country transport for clients in other states as well.
Multi-stage paint correction, photographic documentation of the paint condition, install of PPF, ICON Rocklear, ceramic coating, and any related services (window tint, vehicle wraps, headlight protection) — in the right order, with the right curing time between stages.
Final QC before pickup, including a full delivery walkthrough and care instructions specific to your build.
After delivery, you have direct access to us for any questions, maintenance, or follow-up correction work. Investment
Exotic-tier paint protection isn’t a price-list product. The right plan depends on your car, your color, your usage, your show calendar, and the level of discretion you require.
For reference: a full front PPF on a supercar typically starts in the mid-$4,000s. Full body wrap PPF on a Ferrari 296 or McLaren 720S typically starts in the high four figures and goes into five depending on options. ICON Rocklear adds a meaningful layer to either. Concours-level multi-stage paint correction is quoted separately based on paint condition.
We’ll give you precise numbers in consultation. The firm price will not be cheap, and it will not be the most expensive in San Diego. The work is what justifies it.
